Why do the metal inserts pull out while installing hanging pedestals, bridges and returns?
  • Except for Latitude Series, metal inserts used for all Stocking Program products are expansion inserts.  They achieve pulling strength only when the provided machine screws are tighten completely which makes the bottom of the inserts expand and thus anchor securely on the wood.  But before the provided machine screws are fully screwed in and tighten, the inserts can easily pulled out.  You can test this by screwing in a screw into the insert by only a few turns and pull on it.  The insert will come out.

  • The reason that the inserts come out while installing units such as hanging pedestals, bridges and returns is that there is a pulling force (weight) on the inserts before the screws are tightened and the bottom of the inserts expand to anchor.  Installing with expansion insert is different than the tradictional wood screws where you can hang the pedestal while screw in.

  • For proper installation of hanging pedestals, install the pedestal while the table is upside down.  If the table is already right side up, then you must ensure that the pedestal is tightly pressed against the underside of the table while you screw in the machine screws.  If the hanging pedestal pulls away from the table while you are screwing in the screws, the inserts will get pulled out.  Pay special attention when you are doing the first couple of screws.

  • For bridges and returns, attach the flat brackets on the main units such as the front table and the credenza in the back first.  This allows you to attach the flat brackets easily without putting any weight on the bracket and on the inserts.  If you put the brackets on the returns or the bridges first and attempt to hanging the bridge or return units on the front table and the credenza in the back, it is likely that you are going to pull the inserts out.
