What are the different types of edging used for edge protection?
3mm Thick PVC T-mould
  • T-mould is applied using pressure-fit tongue and groove method.  There is no glue of any kind envolved.  A groove is made on the melamine board.  The PVC T-mould with a tongue that has sharp ridges is hammered into the groove, holding the the T-mould in place.  It is then trimmed and finished.

  • Because the T-mould is held in place by mechanical means, there is no chance that it will come off in the future.  Durability is therefore excellent.

  • Application of T-mould also requires that the corners of the table top be rounded.  This created a softer appearance as well as a safer work environment as rounded corners prevent injury from people running into them.  Many hospitals and institutions have standardized products with this type of edging on worksurfaces.

  • Our Pioneer and Harrison Series use T-mould as protective edging on their tops.

3mm Thick PVC Edgebanding
  • 3mm thick PVC edgebanding is applied using industrial hot-melt glue with a specialized machine.  Application, trimming and finishing are all done automatically in one pass on our edgebanding machine.

  • Because this edging is so thick, it is very unlikely to come off even if the glue weakens due to aging over time and provide excellent long term protection.

  • This edge application process does not require the corners to be rounded and so it gives more square looking, though not considered dangerous, corners.  This also results in a more contemporary looking workstation.

  • 3mm thick PVC edgebanding is use on worksurfaces of Symphony, Discovery, Latitude and Momentum Series and on all exposed edges of Symphony, Discovery, Latitude, Harrison and Momentum Series.

0.6mm Thick PVC Edgebanding (Self-edge)
  • 0.6mm thick PVC edgebanding, sometimes called self-edge, also uses hot-melt glue for application.

  • This type of edging only provides cosmetic cover on component edges.  Over time, edge damages are likely to occurred as the thin edging gives very little protection.

  • Because this type of edging creates very sharp corners, it is rarely used on worksurfaces.

  • 0.6mm thick edgebanding is used on concealed edges of all components and balance of Pioneer Series.

We recommend using 3mm thick edging whenever possible for long term durability.
